Happy Birthday to the Herculaneum Society

This year the Society celebrates its twentieth year since foundation. We’ve done a lot! Here’s a list: 

  • 8 trips to Herculaneum averaging 50+ attendees, every other year except 2020
  • published 28 issues of the Newsletter
  • published monthly e-bulletins  since 2016
  • published 20 volumes of Sozomena 
  • awarded 19 valuable student bursaries
  • run 3 Schools’ Competitions
  • co-founded the American Friends of Herculaneum
  • organised 20 Annual General Meetings, each with one or more speakers and much conviviality
  • organised other meetings, conferences, visits: Paris; Naples; London (with the Institute of Classical Studies, twice; Royal Maritime Museum, Greenwich; British Museum, twice; Museum of London); Getty Museum (Malibu, CA); Silchester; Colchester; Bath; Bristol; many at Oxford; and more.
  • special events for our Benefactor donors
  • successfully fundraised for the Ancient Graffiti Project  and the Custodian’s Room Project at Herculaneum
  • purchased equipment for the Office of the Papyri in Naples 
  • contributed to the Apolline project  at Pollena Trecchia, and excavation at Somma Vesuviana
  • donated to the Society for Classical Studies’ (USA) appeal for papyri.info
  • assisted the University of Kentucky in running the Mellon Foundation / Friends of Herculaneum ‘Digital Restoration of the Herculaneum Papyri Project ‘ in Naples
  • launched YouTube channel
  • contributed jury members for the Vesuvius Challenge
